TB Testing

What is tuberculosis?

Tuberculosis (TB) is a highly contagious bacterial disease that spreads from person to person through
the air. TB mainly affects the lungs but can affect other parts of the body such as the brain, spine and
kidneys.

When do I need a TB skin test?

Educational programs and employers often require TB testing prior to enrollment or hire to determine you are free of tuberculosis disease and not a risk to others. Individuals starting immunosuppressive
medications may be required by their physician to have TB testing prior to starting treatment. TB
testing might also be necessary if you have been a close contact of an individual diagnosed with
tuberculosis.

How are TB tests performed?

A small amount of purified protein derivative is injected just under the skin of the forearm. The site of the injection must be “read” by a healthcare professional two days following the injection to assess for a reaction. If a two-step test is required, a second injection is administered to the opposite forearm no
sooner than 7 days following the first injection. If a reaction occurs, additional testing, such as a chest x-ray and lab work may be necessary.

How do I get a TB test?

TB tests are given every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday by appointment. Please call 740-439-3577 to schedule an appointment. Holidays may impact TB administration. TB tests are good for one year and must be “read” 48 hours after administered.
