Ebola News Release
The Cambridge Guernsey County Health Department was informed this afternoon, October 15, 2014, that the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notified the Ohio Department of Health that the second healthcare worker in Dallas diagnosed with Ebola visited family in Akron from October 8-13.
ODH is working with the Summit County Public Health and the CDC to identify people who may have been in close contact with this healthcare worker and to implement quarantines as necessary. In addition, ODH is working with CDC to identify individuals that may have traveled on the same flight from Cleveland to Dallas.
ODH is working to identify close contacts of this newly diagnosed case and they will work with local health departments to conduct contact monitoring.
Please remember Ebola is spread through direct contact (through broken skin or mucous membranes in, for example, the eyes, nose, or mouth) with
· blood or body fluids (including but not limited to urine, saliva, sweat, feces, vomit, tears, mucous, breast milk, and semen)
. of a person who is sick with Ebola
· objects (like needles and syringes) that have been contaminated with the virus
· infected animals
· Ebola is not spread through the air or by water, or in general, by food but can remain in contaminated clothing, bedding, towels, etc. However, in Africa, Ebola may be spread as a result of handling bushmeat (wild animals hunted for food) andcontact with infected bats. There is no evidence that mosquitoes or other insects can transmit the Ebola virus. Only mammals (for example, humans, bats, monkeys, and apes) have shown the ability to become infected with and spread Ebola virus.
Symptoms of Ebola include:
· Fever (greater than 38.6°C or
101.5°F)
· Diarrhea
· Severe headache
· Vomiting
· Muscle pain
· Abdominal (stomach) pain
· Weakness
· Unexplained hemorrhage (bleeding or bruising)
Symptoms may appear anywhere from 2to 21 days after exposure to Ebola, but the average is 8 to 10 days.
